When you walk on the dry sand this beach sings. The singing beach: what does Cala Violina mean?
Cala Violina gets its poetic name from the unique sound the sand makes when you walk on it. Under the right conditions of dry weather and pressure from bare feet, you can hear the grains of sand emit a faint violin-like tone. This rare acoustic phenomenon occurs due to the unique composition and shape of the sand grains, making Cala Violina one of the few “musical beaches” in the world.
Other examples include the “singing dunes” of Qatar and the Sonoran Desert, or the squeaky sands of Whitsunday Island in Australia, but very few offer the same serene Mediterranean backdrop that this Tuscan treasure provides.
Set in the Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve
Cala Violina sits within the protected Bandite di Scarlino nature reserve—an 8,700-hectare area of dense Mediterranean forest, rugged coastline, and scenic hiking trails. The isolation is part of the charm: there are no roads leading directly to the beach. Instead, you have to walk or bike a short distance through pine forests and shrubland but you’re rewarded with breathtaking views and turquoise waters at the finish line..
How to Reach Cala Violina
You can easily reach Cala Violina from many cities across Tuscany. Cala Violina is located between Follonica and Punta Ala on the southern Tuscan coast. The most popular entry point is from the Parcheggio Cala Violina car park (in Località Pian d’Alma), followed by the short walk to Cala Violina, it’s an easy 1.5 km which takes around 20–25 minutes to the beach. Take some light and comfortable walking shoes for this part!
During the high season (usually from early June to mid-September), access is limited to 700 people per day to preserve the natural environment. You will need the Cala Violina ticket to access the beach, so booking in advance is essential, and you can do this easily via their official website. Check the website for more details before you travel.

To get to Cala Violina from Florence you can drive or take the train and a bus. Drive south towards Follonica from Florence which takes around two and a half hours. Like we mentioned above parking is available on site all year round but you have to book in advance during the summer months. Otherwise you can take the train from Santa Maria Novella to Follonica and then a bus to Cala Violina, this journey is around the same length of time.
If you are coming from Rome to Cala Violina by car, the journey is around two hours and forty minutes taking the exit from Rome to Civitavecchia. Another option is taking a train from Roma Termini to Follonica and then the same bus from there to Cala Violina which takes around the same time.
Parking costs vary by season, and the booking includes your entry to the beach. No ticket? No access during the summer, so be prepared.
What to bring and what to expect
Cala Violina beach has no umbrellas, sunbeds, or shops—and that’s what makes so blissful! It’s part of the Bandite di Scarlino’s protected status to keep the landscape as wild and untouched as possible. There are no restaurants in Cala Violina but in summer, you may find a few food trucks near the car park area, but it’s always smart to pack your own food and plenty of water, especially if you’re visiting with kids or planning to stay the whole day.

The beach itself is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, or simply relaxing under the shade of surrounding pine trees. And with no Wi-Fi, bars, or clubs in sight, it’s a rare opportunity to truly disconnect especially with children. It’s an excellent place to enjoy some relaxing time together without the hustle and bustle of the big cities. Cala Violina is perfect for kids. Children will love the walk through nature to arrive at the beach and with shallow, clear sea it’s ideal for exploring what animals live beneath the water together.
When’s the Best Time to Visit?
While Cala Violina is stunning year-round, spring and early autumn are ideal times to visit. You’ll avoid the summer crowds, the heat will be more forgiving, and the walking trail more enjoyable. If you’re visiting during July or August, book your spot well in advance and aim for an early morning or late afternoon arrival for the best light—and the best chance to hear the beach’s unique musical whisper.
