Kids Trails in the Maremma National Park

Maremma National Park or Parco Dell’uccellina provides an abundance of trails for kids.
The most popular ones are the Flora (A5) and Forest (A6) routes highlighted by Visit Tuscany. These are shorter trails categorised as low difficulty, which are perfect for families with children. Following these easier trails allows you the opportunity to follow a circular path that opens up to the Villa Granducale and provides stunning panoramic views.

Children will love following the sounds of the birds, with over 250 species to spot and name, as well as following the paths of the fallow deer or wild boar. The majority of this route is flat and also accessible for people with disabilities.

Animanatura Wild Sanctuary

Although Maremma is an excellent area to observe animals in their natural habitat, there is also the Animanatura Wild Sanctuary that re-homes animals which are no longer able to live in the wild.

The sanctuary provides wide open spaces for the animals to roam freely in a safe space. Guided tours are provided for the first hour of your visit, with the last hour giving you the chance to discover the sanctuary and the animals they care for by yourself. There are animals from all over the world, not only ones native to Italy, from tigers to ostriches, this is one for the active and animal loving families out there.

Lago di Burano Nature Reserve

Another child-friendly activity is exploring the unique space between the lake and the sea called the Lago di Burano which is a protected land by the WWF Oasis fund.

They offer incredible guided walks around the area that are excellent for children. This is the perfect outdoors activity and educational experience for families. From learning about the birds and wildlife to the origins of the lake itself, the tour is full of interesting facts and stunning scenery. The trail has views over the lake and their website also promotes a small trail from the visitor centre that ends with a butterfly corner. Every inch of this beautiful land will keep your little ones entertained and learning all day long!

Diaccia Botrona

For some of the best walks for children 5-7 years old there is the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve. Stroll along the raised land that emerges between the water of the Laguna di Castiglione Della Pescaia from the Red House, Casa Rossa Ximenes.
